Student Wellness H1N1 Announcement
September, 2009
You have received information from Student
Wellness about influenza and specifically H1N1 influenza. Please read that
information carefully – I have attached it here for your review if you
missed it the first time. Here are a few points from the SOM perspective:
-
Get your seasonal flu immunization ASAP, and get your
H1N1 shot when they become available. The info below from Student
Wellness outlines when and where you can get your shot on the Galveston
campus. Austin students may receive their immunization through Seton or
the Health Center on the UT campus – Adriane Thompson sent an email with
details about dates/times.
Houston based students may receive their immunization at UT
Houston – if you carry the student health insurance, the vaccine will be
free; if you have another plan the copay will be $20.
You can also get an
influenza vaccine from your regular physician or at community locations
such as Walgreens – if you do this, please provide documentation to
Student Wellness so it will appear on your immunization record – we
suspect that many clinical sites will require proof of immunization this
year.
-
If you become ill, do not
attempt to come to class/clinic/the hospital, etc. The clinical
definition of “influenza-like illness” from the CDC is temperature of
100ºF or more with cough, sore throat or runny nose. If you meet these
criteria, please stay home, but be sure to alert the Student Affairs
Dean, your course or clerkship directors, and any other key faculty
(e.g., small group faculty, attending faculty). FAILURE TO INFORM
COURSE/CLERKSHIP DIRECTORS WILL RESULT IN AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE.
-
If you become ill with an
“influenza-like-illness”, you will be required to stay home for at least
7 days, longer if still febrile. Obviously this puts you above the 3
day absence policy for SOM courses. We will have to deal which each
occurrence on a case by case basis – for example, missing a standardized
patient exercise is a different situation from missing small group.
Some basic principles:
-
You will
not fail or be required to repeat an entire course if you are forced
to miss 7 days for an influenza-like illness.
-
Remember
that most lectures are available on the Tegrity system
-
Once you
feel able to concentrate, we may be able to include you in small
group sessions via webcam – contact the course coordinator for
assistance.
-
For
clerkships, the clerkship director will determine the response to
your absence. This may range from no additional work required to
making up the entire missed period at a later date. All clerkships
have some form of patient log – you must see all of the required
patient types and may need additional clinical time if your absence
kept you from completing the log sufficiently.
-
If
critical coursework cannot be completed quickly, you may receive an
Incomplete for the course or clerkship. This does not stay on your
transcript once the work is completed and will have no negative
impact on your academic record.
First Round of
Flu Shot Clinics:
At this
time seasonal flu shots will be available only for students who have patient
contact/are doing clinical rotations or are in a medical risk group as
outlined in the communication below.
We will be scheduling additional flu
shot clinics and sending out an email with the dates & times. Currently we
are NOT making appointments at student wellness
to receive the flu vaccine.
